On November 4th, the anniversary of the "victory" in the First World
War, Italy celebrates its armed forces, commemorating a terrible
massacre to move a border. In that war, thousands chose to throw down
their weapons and ended up before firing squads. The memory of the
deserters and homeless of that time lives on in concrete solidarity with
those who today desert the wars that bloodied the planet. The military
celebrations of November 4th serve to justify enormous military
spending, the shipment of weapons, and Italy's direct involvement in
military missions abroad, in defense of its neocolonial interests.
Everywhere, there are governments that demand that people kill to move a
border, to annihilate "enemies," other human beings massacred in the
name of their country, their religion, or the interests of a powerful few.
Everywhere there are those who oppose, those who desert the wars of
states, those who tear up the flags of every nation, because they know
that only an international humanity can lay the foundations for that
world of free, equal, and equal people that each of us holds dear.
A stone's throw from our homes are the factories that build the weapons
used in the wars that bloodied the planet.
Turin is becoming a major center of the war industry: fighter-bombers,
drones, and targeting systems are designed and built in our city.
From December 2nd to 4th, the world's leading industries will descend
on Turin for the tenth edition of the Aerospace and Defense Meetings,
the international marketplace for the aerospace war industry.
A closed-door event, reserved for insiders: governments, armies, and
contractors who will do good business. Business of death. Last year,
9,000 contracts were signed for the sale of deadly devices, destined for
all theaters of war.
In schools, children, girls and boys, are subjected to a relentless
recruitment campaign and increasingly nationalist propaganda.
In the streets of our city, soldiers armed with machine guns and
truncheons stand alongside police and Carabinieri in ethnically targeted
patrols of the poorest suburbs.
They want us to believe we can do nothing to fight wars.
Those who promote, support, and fuel wars want us to be powerless,
passive, and defenseless. We are not.
Every time a soldier enters a school, we can get involved; when they're
about to open a weapons factory, we can get involved; when they decide
to conduct exercises near our homes, we can get involved.
