Dear New Yorkers,

Every five days since taking office, former Mayor Eric Adams signed a temporary executive order extending a long-running state of emergency inside the city’s jails — a maneuver that circumvents many strict Board of Correction rules intended to ensure the safe housing of people behind bars.

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani will have to decide whether to renew the order yet again or allow the reinstatement of the board’s Minimum Standards, which include rules sharply restricting the use of solitary confinement

“We are optimistic he will not continue illegal and ill-advised emergency orders of the Adams administration related to Rikers Island,” said Victor Pate, Co-Director of the HALT Solitary Campaign.

Mamdani hasn’t yet said what he’s going to do about the years-long “emergency” that began during COVID or a second front in the fight to rein in solitary, a court case filed under former Mayor Eric Adams that has so far blocked a City Council law that would have placed new restrictions on the use of solitary confinement.

With no Department of Corrections commissioner named yet, and a federal judge readying to appoint a new overseer for the city’s jails, the new mayor’s decisions are particularly fraught.

20,000 NYC Nurses Intend to Strike Jan. 12

Approximately 20,000 nurses at 12 private-sector hospitals delivered their 10-day strike notice to management unless they reach agreements on raises and patient and staff safety by Jan. 12, their union, the New York State Nurses Association, announced Friday.

The contracts, covering nurses at some of New York’s most prominent hospitals, including Mount Sinai, NewYorkPresbyterian-Columbia and Montefiore Medical Center, expired on New Years Eve. By law, health care workers are required to issue 10-day strike notices to their bosses so that they can ensure continuation of care for patients.

If none of the hospitals reach deals with the union by the Jan. 12 deadline, the strike could be the largest of its kind in New York City, NYSNA said. The last nurses' strike in New York, at Montefiore Medical Center and three Mount Sinai facilities, in January 2023, ended after three days after the union secured raises and so-called safe staffing ratios.
