On February 28, 2023, the Hellenic Train IC 62 passenger train, with hundreds of passengers on board, collided with a commercial train, of the same private interests, in Tempi. The death toll reached 57, while dozens were injured. This unspeakable tragedy reminds us, in the worst way, of the importance the State and Capital give to human life. What happened in Tempi was a pre-announced murder with the Greek state and private capital as the culprits.With the sale of TRAINOSE to Italian investors (under SYRIZA) and the return of trains that had been withdrawn to Switzerland, the government's dithyrambs regarding the upgrade of railway assets followed. The upgrade they advertised includes: obsolete or non-existent maintenance and control systems and understaffing of the workforce. And while the workers themselves had warned the authorities through press releases and extrajudicial notices and had held successive demonstrations and strikes (which were deemed illegal and abusive by the civil justice system), for the improvement of the network and for additional hiring, things remained as they were, while the 717 contract was never completed. So when our lives are considered another expense in the budget of the state and capital, we are talking about pre-planned murders - not accidents, not "human errors", not "bad timing".
So who is responsible? Isn't everyone responsible for leaving the country's most important railway axis without any signage? Aren't those responsible for reaping funds for telematics projects that were never completed? Aren't those responsible for granting the public railway to private companies that certainly understaffed the necessary workforce? We say the insatiable thirst for more profit of companies and capital, which operates under absolute state protection because the state apparatus, its people, political officials, the judiciary and the uniformed forces constitute the other half of the alliance they form with the bosses.
The criminals of the Ministry of Transport, the Hellenic Train administration and the entire state apparatus, who contributed to this murder, will be held accountable by the entire social base, the organized movement and its resistance. Not only because they are the main ones responsible for this mass murder but because two years after the state crime in Tempi, in order to cover up their responsibilities, they continue to slander and mock the families of the victims and attack those who, by fighting in the streets, highlight the overall murderous nature of the system of power.
The state crime in Tempi, as well as the experience of previous mass state crimes, such as in Ricomex, Samina, Ilia, Mandra, Mati and Pylos, demonstrate the incurably antisocial and murderous nature of the imposed authoritarian and hierarchical way of organizing society by the state and capital. Thus, it becomes clear that the mediation of social relations as a whole by the state, regardless of its political management, over time has not been oriented and aimed at serving social needs, but on the contrary, the priority of state institutions and mechanisms has always been the perpetuation and reproduction of the parasitic relationship of political and economic elites to the detriment of society.
In a period of general disorientation of the public debate around the Tempi crime, the development of the trial and the struggle of the social base, we must bring attention back to what really matters: the bottom-up, unmediated organization of social and class resistances that will ultimately provide the necessary answers to our oppressors, moving on to the counterattack. The new illusions about better management of the system of oppression, about catharsis through the institutions that structurally constitute the murderous nature of the system of power, must be confronted by the organized mass movement that will choose the field of the street and the processes of struggle over electoral illusions. After all, the institutional arrival of hope had been announced again a few years ago under a different guise, confirming that the only essential struggle for justice and dignity is the mass, organized, anti-state anarchist struggle.
