The attack on social spaces has also arrived in Reggio, launched by right-wing government figures with the exploitative and specious justification of a lack of bureaucratic compliance. As if a social space were any other commercial activity. Repression is a constant in government action against those who engage in social opposition. In a situation of repression that we can define as systemic, the actions of the Meloni government, due to their unmistakably fascist roots, demonstrate a clear intensification of the continuous repressive decrees we have witnessed in recent times. Widespread impoverishment, the growth of job insecurity, the spread of the war economy, and the exhaustion of any margin for social mediation are leading to a loss of consensus, to which the government is responding with specific repressive measures necessary to quell social discontent.
In light of all this, the narrative of repression as a response to a security emergency must be completely rejected. This is even more true in the case of the AQ16 social space, which is accused of not having the required permits and therefore endangering people's safety. It's a shame that people's safety is put at greater risk in private commercial establishments, which, in their hunger for profit, ignore-and indeed, ignore-the most basic safety regulations and leave their customers to die crushed and burned.
But as we all know, bureaucratic issues are just a pretext.
Attacks on self-managed social spaces are certainly nothing new, but for this government they represent an offensive with primarily propaganda value, which, in practice, eliminates spaces for social interaction and alternative collective organization.
We call for solidarity with those affected by repression and support those fighting for a free and equal world.
