Railways are increasingly at the service of war. A torrent of public money has been allocated to military transport, diverting it from the investments needed to make the trains that student and worker commuters use daily more comfortable and safe.
In recent years, rail transport has become increasingly dangerous, as staff cuts and the outsourcing of maintenance expose workers and travelers to enormous risks. ---- From Viareggio to Brandizzo, the list of massacres grows. These are not accidents, but murders, the perpetrators of which sit on railway boards and in government offices. With new investments in war logistics, railways, a potential target for drones and bombings, will become increasingly dangerous.
On December 17, 2025, the European Parliament approved the EU Military Mobility Package. A sort of "military Schengen." Free and easy passage for weapons traveling by rail, while refugees and migrants die along the borders.
This package aims to prepare dual-use infrastructure by 2027.
EUR17.65 billion has been allocated to military mobility to strengthen priority corridors by eliminating bottlenecks along the routes and to provide tools to identify and protect strategic infrastructure.
Thanks to dual-use, civil and military, a train full of explosives will travel alongside a passenger train.
In Italy, the projects are included in the EUR1.74 billion (over 50% allocated to rail transport) earmarked by the Connecting Europe Facility as part of the European Military Action Plan 2.0. After the stations in the provinces of Pisa (Tombolo and Pontedera) and Udine (Palmanova), the interventions are concentrated in the stations of Genoa and La Spezia. Specifically, the European Union funding includes EUR28,774,201.50 to RFI for the Genoa Sampierdarena - Parco Fuori Muro terminal and EUR9,274,599.00 to the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority for the La Spezia Marittima terminal.
Milano Smistamento is also involved, where work is underway on the new intermodal terminal, which could become important for military traffic, given its geographic location (Rhine-Alps axis, proximity to mountain passes).
In Piedmont, the high-speed line under construction between Turin and Lyon is considered a key hub for a military corridor, which should terminate in Kiev.
The money wasted on trains carrying tanks, ammunition, and cannons could be used to make the trains we take every day to work and study more comfortable and safe.
World War III is now underway. The US military bases on Italian soil are key logistics and intelligence hubs for the wars that, from Ukraine to Palestine, from Iran to Lebanon, are setting ever larger areas of the world ablaze.
We cannot stand by and watch. We cannot allow war to become just another option.
The bases of war are just a stone's throw from our homes.
It is up to us to pour sand, not oil, into the militaristic machine.
If we allow a train loaded with weapons to pass through our homes, we are complicit in the murder of men, women, and children killed by those weapons.
One day, someone dear to us could die if that train were to crash.
The war is already here.
Stopping it is possible.
Today they want us all to be conscripted.
We desert.
We want a world without borders, armies, oppression, exploitation, and war.
