Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

Things are getting spicy in the battle over the city budget between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council, led by the more politically moderate Speaker Julie Menin (D-Manhattan).

Early Wednesday morning, the Council released its own plan to fill the city’s $5.4 billion budget deficit over the next two fiscal years.

Unlike Mamdani’s “last-resort” proposal, it staved off an across-the-board property tax hike by identifying $6 billion in savings, purportedly without raising taxes or cutting services.

The mayor swiftly hit back, issuing a terse statement that called Menin’s preliminary budget "unrealistic” and accusing the Council of double-counting and overestimating.

Hey city slickers, we have a question for you:
What’s one thing you’d known about New York before moving here, or advice you’d give to a newbie?

Reply to this email with your answer, and we may use your input in a future project. Thank you!

Chakraborty Trial Proceeds

A Queens judge has rejected a move to dismiss attempted assault charges against Jabez Chakraborty, a 23-year-old man diagnosed with schizophrenia who was shot by police responding to a 911 call from his family.

His Legal Aid lawyers had argued Queens DA Melinda Katz had secretly indicted him before they had a chance to present witnesses, including his psychiatrist, to the grand jury.

On Wednesday Queens Supreme Court Justice Leigh Cheng ruled that Katz was "properly permitted to proceed by 'silent' indictment." She also shot down Legal Aid's argument that the DA intentionally delayed Chakraborty's arraignment, ruling that the delay was justified because the doctors at Jamaica Hospital had deemed he was not medically ready to be arraigned.

The case was adjourned until May 13.
