Vapes are considered hazardous waste under federal law, and the lithium-ion batteries that charge them can be explosive if not disposed of correctly.
But a group of New Yorkers is trying to change that — by recycling vapes.
See how one box they set up at a Bushwick nightclub filled to capacity as partygoers dropped off the smoking devices.
“I didn’t know what to do, so I just picked up one vape,” said Nora, a passionate environmentalist and volunteer in the effort. “In six months, I had over 20 pounds I collected while walking all my regular routes.”

Tuesday, May 26: Country and emo collide at “Sugar, We’re Hoein Down,” a line dancing event with emo music in Bushwick. Open to all levels, with beginner lessons at the beginning. $15 and 21+, from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Tuesday, May 26: Archivist Christine Roussel unpacks the story behind “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper,” the famous photo of ironworkers eating on a beam while building Rockefeller Center’s RCA Building in 1932. She talks with William Bartlett, the former head of executive communications at NBC Universal, at the Skyscraper Museum about her new book, which traces the story of the image and the workers featured in it. Free, at 6 p.m.
