Garratt Kennedy’s been living in the shadow of Times Square since long before it became a family-friendly tourist spot populated by tip-hustling Elmos, an M&M store and high-priced selfie stations.
Now Kennedy, a throwback to the old, 1980s Hell’s Kitchen, is fighting eviction amid what lawyers say is a campaign of harassment aimed at pushing the grizzled electrician from his 100-square-foot single-room occupancy apartment on West 44th Street.
Kennedy’s landlords have converted most of the building’s units into $220-a-night hotel rooms — with a shared bathroom down the hall. He and another old-timer in the SRO say the owners are making false claims that the two haven’t paid their rent.
The real estate battle, taking place a block from the Birdland Jazz Club and within walking distance of several Broadway theaters, highlights the dwindling number of affordable SRO flats in New York City, where hundreds of thousands of residents once found shelter in tiny but affordable rooms.
