WORLD WORLDWIDE AUSTRALIA - news journal UPDATE - (en) Australia, AnComFed, Picket Line: May Day 2026 - rebuild a fighting workers' movement (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The problem is capitalism ---- Capitalism is in crisis. Fuel and grocery prices are increasing while the bosses attack our wages and conditions. The environment is being destroyed in the interest of profit. Rent keeps going up and most young people struggle to see how they'll ever afford a house. ---- The crisis is global too. The U.S. and Israel are waging a murderous war in Iran. Genocide continues in Palestine. Australia supports these crimes, and even offers logistical support, like the surveillance tools at the Pine Gap military base, because doing so is in the interests of the Australian ruling class.

The far-right, including scum like Pauline Hanson, are taking advantage of this crisis to push their racist agenda and divide workers against each other.

May Day is a day to remember that it doesn't have to be this way. The day was born out of the fight for the 8-hour day in Chicago, and the execution of leading anarchist organisers on false charges. The government tried to crush the workers' movement, and the anarchist spirit behind it, but the workers persevered and won.

Fighting back
Today, though, the workers' movement is weak. The ruling class knows that our best weapon is industrial action. Whether the fight is for higher wages and safer conditions, or around political issues, like stopping a war, or funding public services, nothing forces those in power to act quite like a strike.

This is why both major parties have worked to make taking industrial action as difficult as possible. The laws are on the side of the bosses. Meanwhile, many of the officials in our unions no longer think like workers on the shop floor. They want to protect their cozy position and keep their politician mates happy.

This is why simply joining a union, or signing someone up, isn't enough.

We need to remember that we, the members, are the union.

Decisions about what we fight for, and how, need to be made by members in democratic meetings. We need real delegate structures calling the shots, not paid officials too scared to take on those in power.

We need to take back control. To make our unions strong again, all members committed to union democracy, and who are willing to fight the bosses directly, should join together in rank-and-file groups.

This is the project that the Anarchist Communist Federation has dedicated itself to.

The solution is revolution
Ultimately, though, the fight will never be over until we get rid of the system responsible once and for all.

The good news is that we can take the bosses' power away from them. It's workers that do all of the work in society. That means we can make everything stop, and even change it for the better. This is the unique position that only the working class has. It's our leverage against the ruling class.

This May Day, let's commit ourselves to building up the power necessary to take industrial action. And not just for pay and conditions, but against the bombing of children, and the destruction of our planet.

When we've rebuilt that power, we can restore May Day to being a day of international strike action on May 1: a demonstration of our growing power, and a warning to the ruling class that we will one day sweep aside their entire system of exploitation and oppression.
