Macron's latest attack on workers: making bakery and florist employees work on our national holiday. Their strategy is simple: chip away, one after another, at all our hard-won social rights. After pensions, social security, and unemployment benefits, now it's May Day . The unanimous inter-union mobilization forced the government to back down on its plan to legally dismantle the unique status of May 1st , a day that is not only a public holiday but also the only paid day off work.
However, he has not given up on amending the labor code by May 1, 2027. The government and employers have three objectives:
Gaining an extra day of production. Even if they have to pay their employees double, the bosses still come out ahead, which should give them pause for thought.
appease their employees by releasing the equivalent of a bonus without increasing salaries.
They want to destroy working-class consciousness by trivializing May 1st and turning it into just another holiday, detached from its history. Because before being declared " Labor Day " and a paid day off under the Pétain regime, May 1st was a day of international struggle for the eight-hour workday. A day of strikes, demonstrations, and uprisings, with its share of repression and shootings, its share of worker and union martyrs, including in France. That is what they want to eradicate once and for all.
The issue, therefore, is not so much about preserving a day of rest that sometimes allows for a long weekend, but rather about restoring May Day's political power for the working class. For our side, this means building strong unions, capable of maintaining a balance of power with capital, and creating a May Day that is not merely a date of commemoration but one that reclaims its central role in the struggle.
More than our celebration, May 1st, 2026 must sound for us like the starting signal, not to keep what we have won, but to win new things.
On May 1st , let's take to the streets ! Starting the very next day, let's organize !
