Statement from the Vahid Company Workers' Union after 82 days of paralysis: Devastating consequences of the recent war and how to break free from the grip of war and repression ---- From February 28 to May 20, we were unable to launch any union action, even temporarily, for 82 days. ---- This devastating war has disrupted the lives and struggles of our workers at every level: from the relentless bombings by the United States and Israel, which have clearly demonstrated that "targeted strikes," "military aid," and "humanitarian interventions" are nothing but a shameful and destructive deception; to the omnipresent military and Basij forces, which have generated fear, anxiety, and anguish among the population, consequences of the bombings and brutal security repression; This includes soaring prices and unacceptable government-imposed internet shutdowns, which have disrupted the work and lives of millions and deprived the vast majority of citizens and independent organizations, including our union, of the ability to communicate and express themselves publicly.
The union had warned for years against war, warmongering policies, and economic sanctions that impoverished and disadvantaged the working class while strengthening the power and resources of the powerful and wealthy. We had repeatedly emphasized, both in the months leading up to the recent war and during the 12-Day War, that the primary victims of war are not the powerful, but the workers and the oppressed and impoverished masses. In this regard, we strongly condemn the American and Israeli military attacks on Iranian territory, the killings perpetrated, and the serious damage inflicted on infrastructure, factories, homes, hospitals, and schools.
Following the uprising of late December and early January, we declared that the massacres and mass executions perpetrated today in Iran's vast, conscious, and diverse society would not only fail to contain the protests and profound social discontent, but would only amplify popular anger. We emphasized that the continuation of the class struggle and social movements demanding rights, freedom, and equality is the only path to liberation for us, the workers and oppressed peoples of Iran, and not military intervention by the United States and Israel, nor by other power-hungry foreign governments or their allies.
This war has not only killed thousands of innocent people, but has also targeted homes, hospitals, schools, and infrastructure, including the country's vital industries, thus destroying millions of jobs, directly or indirectly, or making them increasingly precarious. The blows dealt by this war, particularly to the working class, the impoverished Iranian people, our movements, and our capacity to organize, are irreparable, but they will not stop the struggle of the rights movements. Dominant capitalism and global capitalism have no regard for our lives or our future. If they are now calling for an end to this imperialist and destructive war, it is solely in the interest of their own long-term goals, under pressure from public opinion, in the face of soaring oil and gas prices, shortages of other products, and the risk of a global economic recession, and not with regard to the fate of more than 90 million Iranians and millions of others in the region, victims of this war and the prevailing militaristic and repressive climate.
The outbreak of the recent war has also served as a pretext for the Islamic Republic to execute numerous political prisoners in summary trials, even in violation of its own rules and procedures. Dozens of people have been hanged in a short period and thousands arrested on trumped-up charges, which has intensified the repression already plaguing the country.
This war and all belligerent policies must cease immediately and definitively. The threats of renewed military attacks against Iran made by the United States and Israel must end. The repression and executions perpetrated by the Islamic Republic under the pretext of war must end. The livelihood crisis, rampant inflation, and millions of unemployed created by the war must be addressed by immediately providing the population with essential goods, free of charge or at low cost. Discrimination-based internet access must be abolished, and free and universal internet access is an inalienable right for us, the workers and citizens of this country.
Our current internet access, limited and insufficient to amplify our voices and disseminate information, is extremely precarious, and its continued existence is highly uncertain. Therefore, we take this opportunity to commend the tireless work of our colleagues in public transportation in Tehran and across the country, as well as that of all workers, teachers, medical personnel, retirees, women, students, pupils, children, and all individuals and movements whose lives and struggles have been disrupted and jeopardized by this devastating war. We also honor the memory of all civilians killed and wounded during this conflict, especially our dear children of Minab; they are all very dear to us. We call upon the global working class to maintain its firm opposition to the war and to strengthen its class solidarity in defending the right to self-determination of the working class and oppressed peoples of Iran and the region.
No to war and warmongering policies.
No to repression and tyranny.
In the hope of establishing peace and justice in Iran and throughout the world.
The solution for workers lies in unity and organization.
Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company Workers' Union.
