WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE GERMANY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Germany, FDA/IFA: Borderless solidarity! That was the tri-border demonstration in Basel and Weil am Rhein /by nigra (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

On April 18th, 600 people from France, Germany, and Switzerland showed their solidarity with refugees and gave the middle finger to Fortress Europe in the streets of Basel and Weil am Rhein. Human rights, freedom of movement, and the right to asylum are being increasingly restricted worldwide and, in some cases, fundamentally questioned. Those affected, refugees, and displaced persons are harassed and attacked from all sides, be it through laws (see Common European Asylum System), hate speech from the AfD (Alternative for Germany), or physically by Nazis and other misanthropes. Racism is rampant, and the fight against it is a crucial part of the fight against this whole mess.

Thus, over 600 people both those affected and those showing solidarity followed the call for the tri-border action for borderless solidarity. The demonstration started from two locations: the Badischer Bahnhof (Baden Railway Station) in Basel, Switzerland, and the train station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Approximately 300 people gathered at each location before converging at the Otterbach border crossing for a joint demonstration. The Swiss march made a stop at the Bässlergut detention center, where they sang and chanted slogans in support of the prisoners on hunger strike. This was clearly well-received by the detainees. The border crossing also vividly illustrated what borders mean to many people and the significance of having the "right" passport: Because the demonstration was to continue in Switzerland, many people from Germany without this passport had to find another route to the final rally in Rheinpark in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The risk of repression by Swiss police was too great. When the demonstration later returned to Germany towards Rheinpark, those affected from Switzerland had to stay behind because they did not have the "right" passport.

The colorful and consistently loud demonstration ended in Rheinpark in Weil am Rhein, where people relaxed and listened to the final speeches.

You can find some very worthwhile speeches and audio clips here at Radio Dreyeckland.

No borders, no nations!
