Former Mayor Eric Adams chief of staff Frank Carone stands next to his lawyer, Arthur Aidala, after being arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court on corruption charges,

Dear New Yorkers,

Frank Carone, one of ex-Mayor Eric Adams’ top aides and a longtime Brooklyn powerbroker, was indicted Wednesday on federal bribery charges.

Three others, including Frank Carone’s brother, Anthony Carone, a hotel owner named Yan Po Zhu and one of Zhu’s employees, were also charged in the alleged scheme.

Federal prosecutors accused Carone of accepting $120,000 in bribes from Zhu in exchange for pushing a $6.8 million migrant shelter contract for his hotel in Long Island City.

City officials had repeatedly rebuffed Zhu’s efforts to score a contract, but were eventually pressured by Carone, then Adams’ chief of staff, to ink a deal in October 2022, prosecutors alleged.

Carone arranged to have the bribes funneled through his brother and used the cash to pay for travel, dining, gym memberships and clothes, according to the indictment.

Sudden World Cup Surge Fills Hotels

Last-minute bookings for the first World Cup match in New York sent hotel occupancy in the city soaring over 90%, the highest level of any host city, according to new data from CoStar, a commercial real estate analytics firm.

Guests booked almost a quarter of the rooms the week of the match, held Saturday, June 13. Average daily room rates also jumped 38% over last year, giving credence to the statements of tourism officials that a last-minute surge could turn the event from what appeared to be an economic bust into a boom.

New York may see similar surges in the final weeks of the tournament, but the teams playing in the knockout rounds beginning next week will become clear only in the next few days. Three knockout round matches will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey including the final on July 19.
