“It’s just some fun new adventure,” Immigration Judge Arya Ranasinghe said in court this week, with more than 100 cases on her docket that day alone. “We do the best we can.”
The Justice Department says these “mega master” hearings, as they’re called, will help reduce the country’s massive backlog of immigration cases. But immigrant advocates and people facing deportation proceedings say the mass hearings could lead to unjust removals.
“A lot of people didn’t know they had court,” Mari, an Ecuadorian woman who declined to give her full name, said Monday while waiting for her sister-in-law’s case to be heard in Manhattan.
After finding “proper notice was sent,” Ranasinghe issued removal orders to nearly 40 people and their relatives who did not appear in court that day. Read more about the cases here.

Thanks to a 330-mile transmission line, hydropower from Canada is helping keep the lights on in New York City. The city’s chief climate officer says it’s “a huge game changer.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani reached into the administrations of two City Hall predecessors Tuesday to fill a pair of vacancies on the MTA board.
Mamdani recommended Janette Sadik-Khan, who served as transportation commissioner for Mayor Michel Bloomberg, along with Melanie Hartzog, a former deputy mayor in Bill de Blasio’s administration.
The mayor has four seats on the 23-member board of the regional transportation authority and the two new picks are submitted to Gov. Kathy Hochul for nomination. Sadik-Khan and Hartzog must then be approved by the State Senate before joining David Jones and Dan Garodnick as mayoral holdovers on the panel, which also has six members recommended by the governor.
Mamdani had until the June 4 end of the state legislative session to submit his selections, which he said will be central to pushing his transportation priorities. The two spots had been vacant for months.
