Just over a decade ago, when the de Blasio administration first proposed big land use changes to spur development in East New York, many residents there feared it would lead to gentrification and push them out.
But the picture of the Brooklyn neighborhood now doesn’t bear that out.
Yes, people are pouring in, data shows; between 2010 and 2020, the population there has grown faster than Brooklyn or the city as a whole.
But the number of Black and Hispanic residents has grown, not shrunk, and the median income has grown far less than in the rest of the city. Seniors living there have grown 87%.
