She Should Never Have Survived Dear friends, When Meisies was finally found, no one could believe she was still standing. For weeks she had been alone in the bush, trapped by a cruel snare that had sliced so deeply into her leg it destroyed the very tendons a donkey needs to stand and walk. By the time her owner reached her, the damage was devastating. Without immediate veterinary care, Meisies would have faced unbearable suffering. Thanks to Animals First Aid’s partnership with Blindlove, she was rushed to their Community Care Station, where Dr. Annie immediately began fighting to save her life. The treatment was anything but simple. PLEASE DONATE Credit: BlindLove Meisies had to be heavily sedated while her horrific wound was painstakingly cleaned, dead tissue removed, and fresh bandages applied. Then, every three to four days, the entire painful process had to be repeated again… and again… and again. Between treatments, caregiver Michael Plaatjie made sure she had nourishing food, fresh water, shelter from bitter winter weather, and the gentle care every frightened animal deserves. Against every expectation… Meisies refused to give up. Although the snare had severed all of the flexor tendons in the back of her leg—injuries that normally mean an equine can never walk again—she slowly adapted. Week after week she fought through the pain, astonishing everyone caring for her. Today, more than seven weeks later, Meisies is alive. She will never be able to work again. But she can stay with the herd she loves. She can enjoy peaceful days instead of unimaginable pain. She was given a future because compassionate people made her treatment possible. Sadly, Meisies is not the only victim.
