In early June, thousands of students and teachers decided to march and gather to protest the reform of the "program decree" for education. A fierce crackdown ensued. Children, students, and teachers were subjected to tear gas, baton blows, chokeholds, illegal kettling, profiling, and racist, misogynistic, and transphobic arrests. Even minors were detained... * Extremely violent events occurred in Brussels and La Louvière, cities that have declared themselves "anti-fascist" and are governed by the Socialist Party.
It seems as though the right-wing government is trying to destroy any trace of militant determination and popular rebellion. May this violence serve as a warning to all of society, to the working class, and to future generations.* It is clear that these are not isolated incidents of police misconduct committed by a few "bad apples," but rather the structural functioning of the police force. This is achieved with a guarantee of impunity, especially when its victims are of foreign origin or from working-class backgrounds. It is a class-based police force serving the capitalist bourgeois order.
As a reminder, the government plans to increase the working hours of upper-level secondary school teachers without a salary increase-inevitably creating job losses and detrimental working conditions.
It wants to completely eliminate free school meals, which allowed the most vulnerable families to provide hot meals for their children.
It intends to increase tuition fees in higher education. Registration fees will rise to EUR1,200 instead of the previous EUR835 at universities and approximately EUR300 at colleges.
Against these measures, which reinforce class privileges, mobilization remains essential! The struggle continues! Against this reactionary government, against the repressive police apparatus, the watchdog of the bourgeois state!
