WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova #19-26 - Modena Rebels. Against Fascist Profiteering and State Intimidation (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The week between May 16th and 23rd saw the city of Modena transform into an open battleground between the filth of state racism and the militant, self-organized, anti-fascist response. ---- Saturday, May 16th: The Tragedy and the Activation of the Reactionary Machine ---- It all began on Saturday, May 16th. A meeting was underway within the Spazio Sociale Libera to discuss community self-defense against the new security decrees and the authoritarian turn of the Meloni government. Suddenly, the meeting was interrupted by dramatic news: a car, speeding, had struck eight people who were walking in the city center, in a pedestrian area frequented by all of us daily.

The racist and security-oriented profiteering machine was activated instantly as soon as the identity of the driver was revealed: Salim El Koudri, a thirty-one-year-old born in Italy to Moroccan parents.

Professionals of xenophobic hatred are pounced on the tragedy to exploit it. People like Roberto Vannacci and Roberto Fiore immediately descend on Modena to hold impromptu rallies, attempting to transform a tragedy rooted in hardship or fate into a manifesto of permanent hatred.

This xenophobic hatred, visceral and calculated, is not an anomaly: it is the tool with which power divides the exploited, identifying a false enemy to conceal the true perpetrators of social misery. Against this verbal and anthropological violence, which dehumanizes individuals based on their origins, we do not call for the hypocritical "inclusion policies" of the institutional left. State inclusion is merely a forced assimilation into the logic of capital, a way to make exploitation tolerable as long as it is regulated. We do not want to be included in this violent system; we want to destroy it through internationalist solidarity.

The Following Days: The Witch Hunt and Intimidation of the Lawyer

In the days following May 16th, the climate in the city became even more tense. Social anger was scientifically diverted by the bourgeois media and fascists against a single scapegoat. This witch-hunt scenario was compounded by the heavy pressure and denial of legal protections.

Salim El Koudri's lawyer, who is also the legal historian of the Spazio Sociale Libera, became the target of an unprecedented smear and intimidation campaign. These attacks were not just in the newspapers or on social media, but also involved actual political pressure and veiled threats aimed at isolating the lawyer and, through him, attacking the entire political fabric of anti-fascist and libertarian Modena. An attempted lynching demonstrates how, for the state and its servants, the "right to defense" is merely a hypocritical cover, ready to explode as soon as a case touches the interests of racist propaganda and the established order.

Faced with this reactionary provocation, the self-organized and anti-fascist segment of the city did not stand idly by, responding immediately with mobilization, an immediate demonstration, and the construction of a new square.

Saturday, May 23: Modena's response, complicit and supportive

The mobilization reached its peak on Saturday, May 23, when a determined, self-managed, and participatory anti-fascist march marched through the streets of Modena. Hundreds of comrades, students, grassroots unionists, and individuals gathered to reject neo-fascist hatred and the state's security-based logic that supports it.

Unlike those who limit themselves to the sterile rhetoric of institutional celebrations, the square aimed to remind us that anti-fascism in Modena has deep roots, rooted in the historic and undiminished anarchist tradition of the region. From the barricades of the past to the workers' struggles, Modena remembers its libertarian sons who have always fought fascism not in the name of bourgeois legality, but for the total emancipation of the oppressed.

"Modena's response, in complicity and solidarity, was clear," declared the libertarian and anti-fascist groups promoting the event. "Fascism and xenophobic hatred are not fought by delegating to institutions, signing pacts for inclusion, or defending constitutional charters too often betrayed by those in power. They are fought with grassroots organization, militant vigilance, mutual aid, and direct action in the streets. Faced with the structural violence of those who propose borders, expulsions, and cages, we respond by rejecting all authority."
The mobilization took place in a climate of strong unity and determination, demonstrating that the memory of the anarchist and communard resistance is not a museum relic, but a living tool for blocking any nostalgic and authoritarian resurgence.

There's no room for fascism, racism, their servants, or those who use intimidation to silence their comrades. The struggle continues in the streets, every day.
