WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY SICILIA - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Sicilia Libertaria #468 - WAR - Iran Middle East Kurdistan (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Following the shock generated by the news and images of the genocide in Palestine, which last summer sparked a massive popular movement culminating in two massive general strikes on September 22nd and October 3rd, and the massive national demonstration on October 4th, silence has fallen on the Palestinian question, a silence also caused by the fuss raised by Trump's neocolonial "peace plan." Taking advantage of the media silence, the Zionist regime is scientifically continuing its dirty war in both Gaza and the West Bank. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Zionist government's goal is the annexation of the West Bank and Gaza into Israel, with the consequent expulsion of Palestinians from that entire geographical area. The Zionist project is closely linked to the situation unfolding since February 28th, which is shaking the entire Middle East with the criminal war the United States and Israel have unleashed against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The war, in addition to tragically affecting Iran, is also devastating all the Gulf countries, Lebanon, the Kurdish territories in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Israel itself, even involving Yemen. The escalation of the military conflict represents one of the most significant geopolitical crises to affect the Middle East, and it risks spreading like wildfire.

North Americans and Israelis have targeted the destruction of Iran's strategic infrastructure, attempting to undermine the stability of Tehran's political institutions for a possible regime change. Iran's military response has been swift and devastating, aiming to bring the economies of all Middle Eastern countries allied with the United States to their knees, with repercussions affecting the entire planet.

The ongoing conflict raises questions not only about the political future of Iran but of the entire region. The US and Israeli military offensive, with intense and destructive bombing, has failed to subdue the Ayatollahs' government. The decapitation of the Islamic Republic's ruling apparatus, beginning with the assassination of Ali Khamenei, has not led to the regime's collapse; rather, it has led to its radicalization, with the rise to power of the most religiously and liberticidal wing. The Iranian armed forces have gained greater political control, and the Revolutionary Guards have demonstrated their military power, economic and security structures, and a dense political network. The crisis induced by the ongoing conflict could lead to a more authoritarian system.

Despite the climate of war and harsh repression, the opposition to the Ayatollahs' theocratic regime has not been fooled by Western enticements of "regime change" driven by foreign powers. The slogans chanted by Iranian women, youth, and workers are "Woman, Life, Freedom," "No Sha, No Ayatollah, No Netanyahu." Iran's political and social future, although conditioned by the war between states, cannot be traced solely to statist logic and power struggles. Class dynamics play a fundamental role, heavily impacting the political future of that entire region. In this context, government repression is becoming more pressing. Executions against young opponents have resumed. The Revolutionary Guards and the Basij militia are constantly on the streets, imposing a sort of martial law in Iranian cities to prevent popular protests.

Since the beginning of the war, the brunt of repression and war has also fallen heavily on Rojhilat (Kurdish Iran). The Tehran regime justifies the attacks and arrests with the pretext of fighting the "enemy within." As the Iranian regime's crackdown on Kurdish citizens continues with mass arrests across the Kurdish region, the Iranian military has carried out missile and drone strikes against military and civilian centers in Iranian Kurdistan and against Peshmerga forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The regime's hostility toward the Kurdish people is clear.

The Kurdish people are facing a large-scale attack on multiple fronts. Rojhilat is suffering heavy bombing from the US and Israel, and is also heavily militarized by the Tehran regime; Bashur (Iraqi Kurdistan) has been under heavy attack from Iran since the beginning of the war; Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) has been under attack from the jihadist regime in Damascus since January and is constantly attacked by Turkey. The Revolution of Democratic Confederalism is under attack not only in Turkey and Syria but throughout the region. The revolutionary resistance of Kurdish fighters remains a concrete hope for the people of the Middle East, from Syria to Iran. The strenuous resistance of Kobane and the autonomous territories of northeastern Syria is closely linked to that of the Iranian people against theocracy and imperialism.

The Alliance of Iranian Kurdistan Political Parties has firmly and promptly condemned the attack perpetrated by the Tehran government and foreign forces in Iraq against the Kurdistan Region, making it unequivocally clear that the Kurdish militias are not willing to be recruited by the United States, Israel, or anyone else to be used as a maneuvering force for their imperialist aims. The liberation struggle against the medieval, theocratic regime of the Ayatollahs cannot be confused with an imperialist war of aggression against Iran. The ongoing crisis is a product of competition between capitalist states; a possible change of government does not eliminate domination, nor does it bring liberation. A tangible example of this is what has happened in Syria since the end of 2024, with the regime change in Damascus, the ouster of Assad, and the establishment of a jihadist government led by al-Qaeda members.

In Iran, the Middle East, and the territories with strong Kurdish influence, the real prospect for change lies in a radical and libertarian transformation to overcome the authoritarian, theocratic, xenophobic, and capitalist system. The defense and expansion of the Democratic Confederalism project is, and remains, the concrete hope for the peoples of the Middle East.
