WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY SICILY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Sicilia Libertaria #468 - Editorial: Niscemi, Landslide, MUOS, and Land Protection (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

More than two months have passed, and the risk of landslides in Niscemi as a whole remains high, and the phenomenon is expected to evolve further. The overall picture outlined by site inspections and satellite data leaves no doubt. Compared to the 1997 landslide, it is possible to predict further development of the landslide and the retreat of the slope edge by several dozen meters, especially in the event of further significant rainfall. This development could affect other buildings and further permanently compromise strategic road access. It has been highlighted that the phenomenon is part of a long-term stability pattern, characterized by exceptionally large movements. The 1997 landslide reactivated a deep landslide, directly preceding the landslide of January 26th. An exceptional landslide, which in its acute phase caused a slide that lasted an entire day, at a speed of one meter per hour, with a landslide front nearly five kilometers long along the edge of the town, carrying a volume of 80 million cubic meters of material.

The erosive processes at the base of the Niscemi hill, caused by water flowing from the town into the stream below, played a key role, combined with the contrast between the sand and clay.

What to do? The sewer system and aqueduct must be rapidly reorganized, wells drilled to extract water from the underground aquifers, drainage tunnels constructed, the torrential water networks upgraded, and naturalistic engineering interventions carried out. This is the minimum necessary to contain and stabilize the landslide and secure the slope. Currently, nothing is moving in this direction. No safety has been provided to the hundreds of Niscemi residents forced to abandon their homes, nor to the dozens of businesses forced to close their businesses. The plight of many farmers remains dire, with their agricultural plots devastated and rendered uncultivable by the landslide, resulting in the loss of their seasonal harvest.
A few kilometers away from the town, within the Sughereta forest, the US base in Niscemi is also subject to landslides, and the MUOS itself is at risk of collapsing. The landslide affecting the US base is unrelated to the one affecting the town of Niscemi, even though they are geologically similar. The collapse of the MUOS would be good news for everyone. Were it not for the fact that even the slightest change in the trajectory of those satellite dishes would pose a serious threat to the safety of the people living in the area. If the satellite dishes were to lose stability and the electromagnetic beam were to change direction and hit the town, it is unclear what damage to health it would cause. Landslides have been affecting the North American MUOS satellite dishes for at least three years. The US military has submitted extensive documentation to the Sicilian Region, highlighting the presence of landslides around the MUOS base. They have identified the causes and possible solutions to implement the necessary consolidation measures in the area. The report highlights the severity of the landslide, which endangers both the antenna area and the MUOS satellite dishes, where serious landslides have been detected. The cause indicated is accelerated erosion caused by the action of wild rainwater, which promotes the formation of landslides. These landslides cause dangerous undermining at the foot of the slope, resulting in the formation of cliffs near the sandy-calcareous outcrops.

On April 23, 2025, US Army technicians submitted a request for an Environmental Impact Assessment to the Sicilian Region. On September 15th, Councilor for Land and Sea Giusi Savarino promptly approved the proceeding.
Thus, to consolidate a foreign military base, the bureaucratic and administrative machinery moved swiftly and within a few months approved the safeguard measures. The safety of civil engineering works and residents' homes, which have not seen any intervention in nearly thirty years, is a different matter.
After the landslide that began in January, will the central government and the Sicilian Region now focus on people's safety, or will priority be given to the consolidation of the North American war base?
The geological and hydrogeological fragility of the territory, the environmental value of the area, and the presence of a military infrastructure the size of the MUOS are clearly incompatible.

But while public opinion is focused on the environmental disaster of the landslide, Niscemi has found itself a focal point of the United States' criminal strategy in its war against Iran.
The presence of the MUOS in Niscemi, at a time of acute war crisis between the US and Iran, further exacerbates the dangers for the population. Communications supporting the United States' wars pass through this area daily.
US bases on Sicilian soil are currently directly involved in the war with Iran. Since February 28, Triton spy drones have been taking off from Sigonella, designed to identify targets and send real-time signals to other aircraft to coordinate attacks and precision bombing, including P8 Poseidon warplanes carrying anti-ship missiles and torpedoes that land in the Persian Gulf. Modern technological warfare directly involves the MUOS in Niscemi, which remotely coordinates the bombing of Iran, even though they are launched from military platforms far from Italy.

Niscemi needs public intervention, attention, and significant aid for the population. A decisive shift in land management is needed, along with significant investment in environmental protection without spending a single cent on war and death bases. The presence of the North American base is a danger to the people of Niscemi; it must be closed, the MUOS (National Museum of Natural History) dismantled, and the Sughereta (Sugar Grove) returned to the Sicilians.
