Last week, we released a large amount of data showing the extent to which public institutions in the EU have continued to support Israel's genocide and oppression of Palestinians.
It shows that our public institutions—including universities, government departments, health bodies, energy providers, and the police and military—have engaged in contracts worth nearly €2.7 billion from January 2022 to July 2025. Even in countries that have spoken out in defence of the Palestinian people, such as Spain and Belgium, contracts with Israel have continued to be agreed. Notably, the largest was between the Spanish defence ministry and the arms company Rafael for “aerial combat systems” in April 2024.
The lack of accountability must end.
In the past few weeks, Europe has sweltered under the weight of a worsening climate crisis. MEPs passed the deportation regulation while hateful chants echoed through the room. Keir Starmer finally stepped down, leaving office with a legacy marked by crackdowns on protest and free expression, the erosion of the asylum system, and the mainstreaming of far-right rhetoric alongside a rise in racist incidents.
We are doing our part to push back against the state powers that got us here, and we are glad to have your support.
For the next few weeks, we will be pausing our newsletter for a summer break—but that doesn't mean our work will stop with it. While we will take some time to rest, we will also use the opportunity to focus in on the long haul. We will begin revising our next five-year strategy and thinking about how our work can have the greatest positive impact.
If you have any thoughts to share, please get in touch. Or, if you'd like to show your support for our future work, we'd invite you to join our Friends of Statewatch by making a regular monthly contribution. Any amount goes a long way to ensuring we can continue our work for years to come.
