In a Tuesday announcement, Russia said it is closing all rail crossings with the Baltic states and Finland. The update coincides with Germany and the Netherlands taking over NATO’s Eastern Flank command, but it is unclear whether the two are in any way related.
Otherwise, Ukrainian strikes on Russia continued unabated. Refineries 1,300 km (808 miles) into Russia were struck overnight as Zelensky boasted that Ukrainian strikes now cover half of Russia, while logistics hubs closer to the front in Luhansk and airfields in Crimea were also hit. Commander-in-Chief Syrsky was cautiously optimistic, noting progress but saying no victory is imminent. Defense Minister Fedorov offered a similar take, saying Ukraine now has the upper hand – but only if allies can keep up with the funding before Russia adapts.
But support from Europe is not exactly guaranteed as some hiccups remain. Disputes with Poland over their shared history continue to heat up, this time over a new national pantheon in Ukraine, while the EU is reportedly divided over whether to continue accepting military-age Ukrainian men.
On a side note, rumors have it that Zelensky asked Zaluzhny to reconsider whether to run for president – not confirmed, but we’re leaving it here for the record.
