Syrsky was sacked. Meet Drapaty.
Following days of protests and dozens of meetings with the military, Zelensky chose to replace the top commander with the now-former Joint Forces commander – a man who built his reputation, in part, by ramming an APC through a Russian checkpoint in the Donbas in 2014. As part of the reshuffle, Maj. Gen. Ihor Skybiuk is set to become the new chief of General Staff.
Russia was quick to put Drapaty on its wanted list, while Syrsky highlighted his achievements before his exit. Fedorov also welcomed Drapaty’s appointment and hailed it as a fresh start, but there is still no clear answer as to where the tech-wizard minister will go despite Zelensky’s hints that some kind of “tech” position awaits him.
The reshuffle coincided with major Ukrainian strikes on Wildberries – Russia’s equivalent of Amazon – and reports of behind-the-scenes talks between Berlin and Moscow in Azerbaijan. Rumors also suggest Moscow is rejecting the return of occupied parts of Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions in peace talks, while Rubio is set to meet Lavrov soon in Manila.
