The NATO summit in Turkey’s Ankara has started – with a few blasts, kind of.
Over 400 drones headed toward Moscow just hours earlier in what could be a retaliatory strike for the last two attacks on Kyiv, as Zelensky said maybe a thousand drones over the Russian capital could change Putin’s mind about the war. Presidential Office chief Budanov noted the increased intensity of the fighting in recent weeks, but argued that it might simply be the kind of escalation that precedes the (potential) end of the active phase expected by the end of this year.
Macron’s hotel in Damascus was also rocked by nearby explosions shortly after his departure – so there’s the other blast.
In Ankara, some expect a major reshuffle in NATO as Trump’s not exactly committed to the alliance, while Ukraine is appealing for more air defense and bilateral deals at the summit as members are expected to deliberate on defense spending. We’ll also see what Trump’s meeting with Zelensky tomorrow yields, as the former doesn’t seem too thrilled with NATO after his Iran fiasco.
And in what might be another bombshell today (puns intended) – the Monaco bombing suspect has been found. Dead. In Ukraine. Allegedly murdered by a military intelligence officer. That’s all we know for now.
