Kyiv’s mayor has declared tomorrow, July 3, a day of mourning for the capital.
After Zelensky warned of a major Russian air raid just hours earlier, a massive attack struck the capital overnight. It started with drones spreading across Ukraine’s airspace, followed by wave after wave of missiles shrieking through the otherwise quiet summer night. At least 20 people were killed after a residential building was partly leveled, while a record 52,500 residents sought shelter in the Kyiv metro overnight.
The attack also damaged energy facilities and led to partial blackouts, while Ukraine’s sanctions envoy said more than 35,500 foreign components were found in the weapons used in the attack. Zelensky said there will be payback – one way or another.
Conversely, Ukraine also struck Russia overnight, targeting the country’s largest oil refineries and bridges. Rumors also have it that Ukraine launched its homebrew ballistic missile near Moscow on Tuesday.
More reports also suggest Russia is fumbling its war – a US think tank said Moscow’s campaign has effectively stalled in 2026, alongside Ukrainian reports of Russian troops refusing to fight in the Dnipro Delta near Kherson due to how bad the situation has become. On top of that, Putin’s fear of a price on his head has also reportedly led to the fourth expansion of his protective detail since 2022.
