Some minor updates after Thursday’s political earthquake.
Protests have continued into a second day and are likely to keep going. In terms of appointments, former SBU head Yevhen Khmara has been named acting defense minister and is the candidate for the official post, while Taras Kachka, a major figure in negotiating reform frameworks for Ukraine’s EU bid, was offered the role of EU envoy. Following Serhiy Koretskyi’s appointment as PM, Naftogaz also named its new CEO today.
Ihor Klymenko – Zelensky’s original pick for defense minister – was offered the role of secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (RNBO). We still don’t know where Fedorov will go.
The Kremlin has tried to downplay its feelings about this fiasco, but commentators – especially milbloggers – have been largely happy to see Fedorov gone. That alone should be enough to show why so many Ukrainians have taken to the streets.
