Rafael Costa has been a teacher in the municipal public education system of Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, for over nine years and also works as an independent cartoonist, raising social and political debates in the city through a private social network - without any institutional affiliation. --- The professor is being politically persecuted for his critical stance through art. After publishing a cartoon critical of the American white supremacist and gun advocate Charles Kirk, Rafael began to be persecuted by the city hall of Bento Gonçalves and by the former mayor Diogo Siqueira, linked to the PL party.
Through an accelerated administrative process, based on a publication on a private social network (completely unrelated to his classroom duties), which ignored the public servant's broad right to defense, Rafael was dismissed from his teaching position, suspending his source of income and the exercise of his profession.
Rafael's dismissal is part of the institutional violence and political harassment promoted by reactionary sectors that do not accept political criticism and freedom of expression that threaten their reactionary values. The persecution of Rafael Costa sets a dangerous precedent and aims to intimidate the rest of the education sector in the city.
We demand the immediate reinstatement of the employee and the annulment of any punishments against him, as well as an end to the political persecution of any municipal public servants.
