Planning officials say some neighborhoods, especially those near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, have become “common destinations for immigrants relocating from Brooklyn” — echoing “a similar trajectory taken by Brooklyn’s Italian immigrant community” a half-century earlier. The demographic shift has brought more Chinese businesses and services catering to recent arrivals on Staten Island.
"We can hear Chinese anywhere now," Gary Tai, president of the Chinese Society of Staten Island, a cultural association dedicated to serving the community, told The City Reporter. "On the ferry, on the buses."

The world’s largest shopping bag-shaped billboard is no more.
The iconic ad for Macy’s Herald Square was taken down over the weekend at 34th Street and Broadway, according to Ephemeral New York, revealing the tattered structure that for the last century has sat above what’s now a Sunglass Hut. A spokesperson for Macy’s says the sign was removed as part of “broader updates by the billboard owner to modernize the space.”
Real estate company Kaufman Realty is behind the historic holdout building. Macy’s sued Kaufman in 2021, alleging it was set to give the prime advertising space to a “prominent online retailer,” which Macy’s said was most likely Amazon. It’s unclear what will happen to the grimy limestone structure, but in June the New York Post reported there were plans to revamp the billboard and Macy’s and Kaufman were negotiating over the ad space.
Kaufman Realty did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
