Dear New Yorkers,
In 2024, a 20-year-old Queens man named Genaro called 911 for an ambulance for his older brother Steven, who was having a mental health crisis and had gotten into a fight with his relatives.
Police came to the family’s apartment in Flushing, and the situation escalated as a supervisory officer began asking questions about who had done what, Genaro recalled.
He and his brother were arrested on the scene — Genaro for assault and Steven over a broken TV.
“We were asking for help,” their mother Gloria said. “We were not asking for the police to come.”
The family’s story sheds light on how mental health calls in the city sometimes result in people being charged with crimes, or even graver outcomes. Read more about what followed the police encounter and how advocates are pushing to change the city's handling of mental health emergencies.

Three New Yorkers died in their homes from heat-related illness during the heat wave over the weekend, City Hall said Monday.
“Our hearts are with their families and loved ones,” the mayor’s press secretary Joe Calvello said in a statement.
Officials did not provide additional details about the deaths. According to city data, about 500 New Yorkers annually die due to heat-related illness, with an average of 490 heat-exacerbated deaths, or deaths caused by excessive heat worsening an underlying illness.
Temperatures were dangerously high Wednesday through Saturday, with heat indices in the triple digits. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced an emergency heat plan ahead of the heat wave, expanding access to cooling centers, extending public pool hours and deploying vans stocked with electrolytes, sunscreen and food across the city.
Nearly 150 people visited emergency rooms for heat-related illness Friday — a single-day record high since at least 2017, health department data shows.
