Preface
During the Italian Anarchist Federation's 2025 congress in Carrara, the debate on environmental struggles began. During the debate, it emerged that the problem of climate change, or rather, the climate crisis, is an issue whose global nature and multiple implications for environmental, social, and economic issues not only affect the entire planet Earth, but also allows for an analysis that inevitably addresses the complexity of the society in which we operate.
As a working group, we intertwined the aspects considered most significant, seeking to highlight all the critical issues that, framed within a single context, support the thesis that there is no real solution to the climate crisis without the dismantling of the state and capitalism in their political, economic, and military aspects.
We also discussed the role science plays in this context, recognizing that, while fully aware of its non-neutrality, it is essential to denounce technocratic pressures and instead foster close relationships with those who conduct research, collect data, and develop models that enable us to interpret the evolution of phenomena.
Science is not neutral because its practice is intrinsically influenced by the human, social, economic, and cultural context in which it operates. Although it strives for objectivity, research is guided by political choices, funding, and the values of those conducting scientific research. Science, therefore, does not operate in an "aseptic vacuum." Scientific facts and data are "true" but can be sought and selected in different ways; the application and direction of science are conditioned by time and funding. The very initial question being investigated points in one direction rather than another.
The narrative of science and of those conducting research and experimentation as a super partes entity is illusory. The question of science's social responsibility is a theme that has run throughout history.
Einstein wrote in his open letter of January 1947: "(...) We scientists recognize our inescapable responsibility to convey to our fellow citizens an understanding of the simplest facts of atomic energy and its implications for society. This is our only security and our only hope-we are convinced that an informed citizenry will act in favor of life, not death.
In this sense, it is necessary to support a universal science, open to all and unfettered by national interests, by the profit of the few to the detriment of the many, a science whose results belong to the community, controlled by an organized skepticism where scientific knowledge is subject to critical judgment and considered valid until proven otherwise.
Aware of its condition of illusory neutrality, we can nevertheless support it as a collective social enterprise. Therefore, an inclusive science that, while rigorous in its application of the scientific method, does not present itself as a superior entity or undisputed "guide," but, supported by and in close correspondence with society, is oriented toward positive goals.
We also felt it appropriate to avoid gender inflection by using the expedient of truncated words, with some exceptions, to facilitate fluent reading and the use of a voice reader.
