On April 23, 2025, U.S. Army technicians submitted a request for an Environmental Impact Assessment to the Sicilian Region. Giusi Savarino, Councilor for Land and Sea, promptly approved the procedure on September 15. --- Thus, to consolidate a foreign military base, the bureaucratic and administrative machinery moved with great speed and within a few months approved the safeguard measures. The situation is quite different for the safety of civil engineering works and the homes of residents, which have not seen any intervention in almost thirty years.
After the landslide that began in January, will the central government and the Sicilian Region now focus on people's safety, or will priority be given to the consolidation of the U.S. war base?
The incompatibility between the geological and hydrogeological fragility of the territory, the environmental value of the area, and the presence of a military infrastructure the size of the MUOS is evident.
But while public opinion is focused on the environmental disaster of the landslide, Niscemi has found itself a focal point of the United States' criminal strategy in its war against Iran.
The presence of the MUOS in Niscemi, at a time of acute war crisis between the US and Iran, further exacerbates the dangers for the population. Communications supporting the United States' wars pass through this area daily.
US bases on Sicilian soil are currently directly involved in the war with Iran. Since February 28, Triton spy drones have been taking off from Sigonella, designed to identify targets and send real-time signals to other aircraft to coordinate attacks and precision bombings. These drones include P8 Poseidon warplanes carrying anti-ship missiles and torpedoes that land in the Persian Gulf. Modern technological warfare directly involves the MUOS in Niscemi, which remotely coordinates the bombing of Iran, even though they are launched from military platforms far from Italy.
Niscemi needs public intervention, attention, and significant support for the population. A decisive shift in land management is needed, along with significant investment in environmental protection without spending a single cent on bases of war and death. The presence of the North American base is a danger to the people of Niscemi; it must be closed, the MUOS (National Museum of Natural History) dismantled, and the Sughereta (Sughereta Forest) returned to the Sicilians.
