Ukraine celebrated its 35th year of independence on Monday, Aug. 24.
World leaders congratulated Ukraine on the occasion – including Trump, though the US also, again, refused to condemn Russia’s invasion in a UN statement, while Rubio pledged security and economic ties. The CIA director’s unannounced visit to Moscow just made things all the more ambiguous.
The capital Kyiv also saw some high-profile guests, including the UK’s Burnham, whose trip marked his maiden trip abroad as PM as he transferred the know-how for Storm Shadows to Kyiv and signed more deals on AI defense. Kellogg was also in town and called for the mobilization of Ukrainian women, though unfortunately, his presence did not really put a stop to some Russian attacks on Kyiv over the weekend, as he did before.
In other news, Zelensky said some Patriot missiles have arrived, a British man was reportedly killed fighting for Russia, and a Ukrainian-Moldovan border checkpoint was struck once again – for the third time, in fact.
Kanye West’s concert in St. Petersburg also reportedly fell through.
