On July 14, 1896, Buenaventura Durruti was born in León, Spain. From childhood, he experienced the great social transformations and conflicts that took hold at the beginning of the 20th century, and would become one of the leading figures of the CNT and the Spanish Revolution. Durruti worked and actively participated in various Spanish regions, also traveling through parts of Latin America and the Caribbean - a journey motivated by exile, along with other comrades. Returning to Spain in 1931, he took part in several strikes and revolts, and was imprisoned in 1934, 1935, and 1936.
Always active in the struggles and agitations of that time, he became an important revolutionary militant, defending the need for the people to take up arms to completely defeat fascism and to act effectively against the ineffectiveness of the Popular Front and the vacillations of the CNT. He lost his life in November 1936, at the age of 40, shot on his way to the battlefront in Madrid, in circumstances never fully clarified. His funeral brought together 200,000 to 500,000 people in the streets of Barcelona, one of the largest mass demonstrations of the time.
Durruti left an important legacy for anarchism and popular struggles. The 130th anniversary of his birth, as well as his militant trajectory, are extremely important for reflecting on the struggles of the present and the future. On the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Revolution, his trajectory and thought are a landmark for the memory of anti-fascist fighters worldwide.
