Dear New Yorkers,

Bingo. BYO hot sauce. Menu shakeups. These are some of the hacks older New Yorkers and senior centers have found for the weekly vegan meals the city has required at the facilities since 2023.

The administration of former Mayor Eric Adams, who credited a vegan diet with reversing his Type 2 diabetes, imposed the policy for older adult centers to serve one plant-based meal per week. Some centers have sharp attendance drops on those days, according to The City Reporter’s analysis of a year of meal records from the Department for the Aging, covering more than 300 centers.

In Midtown, the Encore Aging Through Arts Center serves vegan meals on bingo days because “we know a lot of people come and would at least try it,” said director Jennifer Asquino. And when patrons complained about too many beans or too few potatoes, the kitchen made adjustments.

“I think that for some people, they hear plant-based or veganism, and they immediately make certain assumptions that the food won’t be good,” Asquino noted. “Some of those concerns were addressed just by producing good food.”

Other older adult centers record much steeper declines in attendance on vegan days, sometimes by as much as half compared to the average weekday. “When one program is serving the vegan meals, they just go to a program that’s serving a regular meal,” said Angella King, director of the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center in Jamaica.

Teen Drowns in Rockaway

A 17-year-old boy drowned at Rockaway Beach last weekend after lifeguards were no longer on duty in their chairs, becoming the second teenager to drown at the beach this year.

Two swimmers were in distress near Beach 84th Street around 7:30 p.m., and one was rescued from the water, according to the Parks Department. The other swimmer was recovered a block away, unconscious and not breathing.

Video posted to social media showed the dramatic rescue, where first responders brought the teen out of the water and tried to resuscitate him as beachgoers watched. The beach closed for swimming at 6 p.m., but lifeguards were still at their nearby stations with the city’s heat emergency plan in effect.

“We’re saddened by this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out to the victim's family and friends,” Parks Department spokesperson Gregg McQueen said in a statement.

Brandon Figueroa, 18, drowned at Rockaway Beach in May, before lifeguards began work for the summer. His body was found miles away more than a week later.
