Dear New Yorkers,

The body of a longtime taxi driver who was found dead in his cab in Harlem last month will be returned to his home country of Ivory Coast after the city’s taxi union and Ivorian New Yorkers tracked down his relatives and raised at least $7,500 to help cover the journey and funeral expenses.

The New York Taxi Workers Alliance and police say Richard Coulibaly died not far from where he lived alone in a rented single room. He was discovered unresponsive at the wheel of his parked taxi on the evening of July 2, during a heat wave marked by the city’s first 100-degree day in more than a decade. City medical examiners are still investigating his cause of death.

The father of four’s remains are set to be shipped in the coming days to the city of Abidjan, according to the taxi union. As his loved ones await more details about when his body will arrive, his younger brother Christophe Coulibaly said he is grateful to those who have pushed to return Richard to the family’s home village for burial.

“They have bled themselves dry, they have made an effort,” Christophe said in French in a phone interview this week. “May God bless them and may their souls sanctify us for everything they have done.”

Dinosaur Jr. Canceled in Bushwick

The city Parks Department pulled a permit for a free Dinosaur Jr. show planned for Saturday at Maria Hernandez Park in Brooklyn after realizing the crowd was likely to far exceed the 80 people organizers said would attend in their application, according to a spokesperson.

The alternative rock legends announced the free show at the Bushwick park earlier this month alongside other smaller concerts across the city. The organizers, including guitar maker Fender, said this week they moved the show to 250-capacity TV Eye in Ridgewood, citing public safety concerns.

“We had a dream to bring everyone to Maria Hernandez for this, but ultimately the risk factor got too high and we made the executive call to move Saturday’s show,” Show Brain, which puts on free shows in public spaces, posted on Instagram. Admission was free, but fans had to RSVP online.

Dinosaur Jr. last year played the Prospect Park Bandshell, which has capacity for up to 10,000 people.

The organizers said they planned to announce a new outdoor show soon, and the Parks Department said they can apply for a large-scale event permit.
