Dear New Yorkers,

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters union claims in a new labor complaint that Amazon and more than a dozen of its subcontractors violated New York state law by failing to give delivery drivers sufficient notice of their impending terminations.

The union estimates more than 1,300 workers were affected by closures of shops complainants say were shut down with no warning between September 2023 and October 2025. The Teamsters also identified cases where the e-commerce giant’s subcontractors allegedly sent layoff notices after the layoff or closure date.

“It was devastating. I was looking forward to going back in and making next week’s paycheck,” Latrice Johnson, a single mother who said she was laid off as a delivery driver last August, told The City Reporter. “You call me a top driver two months ago, and now you’re giving me the boot?”

The Teamsters say the workers could be owed up to $11 million in back pay under the WARN Act, which requires businesses with at least 50 full-time employees to give 90 days’ notice of closures or mass layoffs to employees and the state Labor Department. Amazon says the drivers were not its employees and it had no responsibility for its subcontractors' operations.

“They make their own decisions when it comes to hiring, fleet management, capacity planning and route assignments — and whether they want to work with other companies besides Amazon,” spokesperson Steve Kelly said in a statement.
