Edwin Jeovanny Lopez Cornejo immigrated from El Salvador nearly 20 years ago and had a 12-year-old daughter, who is an American citizen, legal filings state. His mother said in an interview posted to Facebook by immigrant rights groups that she last heard from him in a phone call on Friday and he didn’t feel well.
Lopez Cornejo had focal epilepsy, high blood pressure and high blood sugar, among other chronic conditions, according to a federal habeas corpus filing submitted on his behalf late last month. The petition seeking his release did not allege he was being denied regular medicines.
His attorney said he had no criminal history and most recently worked as a landscaper and in a New Jersey warehouse. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested him on June 18 as he was walking to get his car from a towing company in the state.
“I’ve lost my son,” his mother, Maria Cornejo, said. “If there isn’t justice, they are going to continue this way forever, and we don’t know how many more people we have to lose in this country, working people.”
