Progressive Democrats rally on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall to call for Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn to accept defeat in the race to run the borough’s Democratic Party, Aug. 24, 2026.

Dear New Yorkers,

Pressure is mounting on Brooklyn Democratic Party leadership to cancel an executive committee vote planned for Tuesday night that could dramatically reshape the size and composition of that committee.

Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn says her proposed changes would make the party more representative of Brooklyn’s more than 1 million registered Democrats. But reformers have slammed the move as an attempt to stack the executive committee so that Bichotte Hermelyn can maintain control of the party by adding new members loyal to her.

The internal vote follows a June primary election where reform-oriented district leaders won a majority for the first time in nearly two decades of organizing against the county establishment, claiming enough seats to flip the leadership to district leader Julio Peña III. It also comes amid prominent Democrats' opposition to Bichotte Hermelyn's proposals — including the state Democratic Party chair, state attorney general and minority leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

Reformers filed a lawsuit Monday, asking a judge to block Tuesday’s vote, but the first judge assigned to the case recused themselves and the second judge declined to stop the vote ahead of time. The plaintiffs say they will refile the suit after the vote, should it go forward.
