On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the U.S. government placed Autistic/Invented on a list of "global terrorist organizations." --- Autistici/Inventati is a collective that has been providing free, secure computer communications to activists around the world for 25 years. --- The US government's decision is an attempt to escalate the increasingly authoritarian Washington administration's declared war on social movements to an international level. It's not a symbolic move, but a direct attack on a medium used daily by tens of thousands of people to protect their communications from the scrutiny of various spy agencies, political profiling agencies, and commercial firms.
The measure affects all movements: websites, mailing lists, group blogs, collectives, etc. are partially out of order.
Unable to technically attack Autistici/Inventati's infrastructure, the US government has decided to use sanctions to block economic relations with the collective. This means they are unable to receive donations, and A/I relies on donations and subscriptions, but also cannot register domains, rent or buy servers, and perform all the technical operations required to operate internet services. It should not be overlooked that many activist groups based in the US use A/I's services in their fight against the US government.
The Trump administration has faced a strong and widespread popular backlash over the past year, characterized by direct action against the increase in ICE raids targeting undocumented workers.
The MAGA administration is preparing to launch a crackdown on abortion, has harshly attacked the living conditions of LGBTQ+ people, and has mandated federal prosecutors to prosecute those who oppose the deportation campaign. It is attempting to impose climate change denial as state doctrine. The US government is implementing, step by step, a new witch hunt worthy of the sad memory of McCarthy and Thayer.
We're not surprised: the ruling class must demonstrate its iron fist against anyone who dares challenge its attempt to regiment society into new authoritarian systems that eliminate any opposition to a social organization rooted in capitalist and patriarchal logic. The wave of struggles that have marked recent months could soon be repeated: bosses and gendarmes are afraid, and for this reason they are preemptively attacking the critical communications infrastructures of social movements.
Not only that. The current administration is a direct expression of the digital platform oligarchs, the robber barons of the 21st century, those who have filled their bank accounts by imposing a digital media oligopoly and building a new military-industrial complex based on information technology services. Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Palantir are the companies lining their wallets with contracts from the US Department of War. Everything outside the networks controlled by these platforms is inherently to be regarded with suspicion and fear and must be crushed.
We're not surprised. In the 1920s, fascism burned down printing presses and newspaper offices; today, it's trying to shut down websites and blogs. The attack comes from the United States, and the Meloni government remains silent.
Experiences like that of Autistici/Inventati and many other collectives demonstrate that it is possible to build IT systems that respond to our needs, not those of the old or new bosses. These experiences, by their very existence, counter the desire for domination of the likes of Thiel and Bezos.
The Italian Anarchist Federation expresses its solidarity with the Autistici/Inventati collective and invites everyone to support the self-management experiences that guarantee, with their constant commitment, the means of communication for those fighting for a world radically different from that of the various Trumps and Rubios and their servants.
