WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Reggiana, FA: Let's support Bosco Ospizio! (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In Reggio, real estate developers have long since been eyeing another piece of land for development, as if it were needed after the construction binge of recent decades. A green space, in an otherwise densely built-up area, filled with tall trees and other spontaneous vegetation, and a refuge and habitat for many animal species. We're talking, of course, about Bosco Ospizio, which the businessmen at Conad, in full agreement with the Municipality of Reggio, are preparing to bulldoze to make way for yet another supermarket and other developments. All this at a time when the effects of the lack of green spaces and the growth of development are visible to everyone, with our cities transformed into furnaces. And may the Municipality of Reggio come to terms with it: no one believes the fairy tale that planting a few hundred toothpicks in street flowerbeds is "compensation" for the felled trees. It's all about business and profit for a few versus the hardship of many.

Throughout Italy, politicians and governments of all stripes blather about mitigation measures in the face of the ongoing climate catastrophe, only to turn a blind eye when profit, which they regard as more important than life, comes into play. Meanwhile, some self-organized and spontaneous committees, founded by people who are simply fed up with the hypocrisy of those who, faced with the disaster, continue to cut down trees, have demonstrated that these struggles can be won. One of many is the Besta Committee in Bologna.

As the Reggio Emilia Anarchist Federation, we denounce this real estate speculation, which sees Conad and the Municipality marching together, and we support the Bosco Ospizio Committee, which has long opposed the operation and is currently holding a permanent protest in front of the forest to prevent the bulldozers from destroying it. Only through self-organized, grassroots struggles can we save our future.
