More signs suggest the war is heating up.
Over the past day, Russia struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova once again, in addition to another passenger train in the Kharkiv region and a high-rise in Kyiv, as Kyiv also warns of Russia’s plan to test its new missiles against western Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv struck the Russian warship Admiral Essen at Novorossiysk, with drones reported some 1,800 km (1,118 miles) into Siberia’s crude production heartland.
Diplomatically, there are also few signs of de-escalation after Witkoff and Kushner’s visits, as the West braces for the war lasting into 2027, with more weapons pledged at Ramstein ahead of a difficult winter.
But with Lavrov also raising the stakes by calling for the entire Ukraine to be turned into Russia’s buffer zone, it’s also unclear how a proposed Trump-Xi-Putin trilateral meeting in November might change things for the better, but we shall see.
With hostilities ramping up, Germany also urged Ukrainian men to return home of their own accord, while drone nets were spotted over Chornobyl amid concerns of another northern offensive.
