Another weekend filled with action.
On the last day of Russia’s State Duma elections, Ukraine sent its regards with what Moscow called an unprecedented strike, with over 1,600 drones, on nearby refineries and infrastructure. Zelensky said the strike package also included the previously unknown Pelican missile, which raised everyone’s curiosity and offered little explanation.
But it should come as no surprise that Putin’s United Russia party scored a major victory, with Chechnya’s Kadyrov scoring a staggering 99% (99.85%, to be precise) of the votes in his enclave. The EU has cast doubt on the overall results, in addition to threatening sanctions over the fact that Russia held the elections in occupied Ukraine – though with news that the bloc is somehow failing to agree on which Russian oligarchs to sanction (mostly thanks to France and Slovakia), let’s just hope the new sanctions work better than this.
Zelensky also had a call with Trump over the weekend, after which the Ukrainian head of state hinted at “diplomatic momentum” with a Trump meeting scheduled in NYC. But with Trump still fixated on Russia’s diesel despite signing Graham’s sanctions bill, let’s say the war is still filled with wild cards, despite Ukraine now holding a few aces – if it can use them, that is.
