Europe says Russia is eyeing escalations beyond Ukraine.
Which is not exactly something new, as Europe has been warning about it for months. But the latest security assessment from Denmark spelled out more details on how it might unfold – on top of hybrid threats, Russia is also reportedly eyeing controlled confrontations in the Baltics within months to test how far NATO’s Article 5 can move, a report that was eerily echoed by Poland’s Sikorski, who said Russia is planning “something big,” and by Russian state media publishing, then taking down, an opinion piece about how a Baltic war might unfold.
The scary thing is, escalation is already here and being normalized. With the recent attacks on border crossings and drones flying over Romania, Poland and the Baltics, it’s unclear how far back Article 5 can move before no one takes it seriously anymore.
Kyiv also came under heavy bombardment again, with bodies reportedly lying on the street after Russia continued to hit residential buildings in the daytime. The semi-good news is that Kyiv claimed to have obtained Russia’s winter attack plans, and Zelensky said Trump already promised Patriot license transfers – but again, the “when” remains the biggest mystery.
On a side note, journalists also reportedly found the name of Putin’s secret granddaughter, who took her mother’s name rather than her father’s, who also happens to be Zelensky. Reality is stranger than fiction sometimes.
