WORLD WORLDWIDE SOUTH AMERICA BRAZIL BRASIL - news journal UPDATE - (en) Brazil, OSL: Solidarity with the destruction of the coastal vegetation in Maricá! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We express our solidarity with the Pro-Coastal Vegetation Movement, the Zacarias Fishermen's Community Association for Culture and Leisure (Acclapez), the Association for the Environmental Preservation of the Maricá Lagoons (APALMA), and the Marakanã Village, which held an event on Monday, the 24th, in defense of the coastal vegetation and the traditional peoples of the city of Maricá (RJ).

For decades, these movements have been resisting the advance of international real estate speculation, which aims to transform an environmental protection area (APA) into a multi-million dollar resort (Maraey) financed by local and Spanish companies.

In recent months, the coastal vegetation has been devastated by machines, intending to destroy 148.43 hectares of preserved area, which is equivalent to about 150 football fields. The goal is to build a wealthy neighborhood, increasing gentrification, rental prices, and social and ecological impacts on the city.

It is important to emphasize the nefarious role of the Workers' Party (PT) government and its mayor, Washington Quaquá, who not only attempts to criminalize protesters but also divides traditional communities, city workers, and indigenous peoples of the region through political co-optation in favor of the project and electoral promises.

From the beginning, the Resort project has had not only political support from the city hall but also economic support of R$ 12.5 million via a sovereign fund, aimed at starting the construction of Maraey.

The Maricá Restinga is home to hundreds of native, endemic, and rare species, being the most researched restinga in Brazil. Furthermore, it acts as a natural barrier against the impact of tides and waves, supporting the preservation of coastal communities.

The effects of the destruction of the restinga are not only ecological but also economic. The construction of a mega-resort for the rich will cause gentrification and the expulsion of the poorest workers, fishermen, and the original population from the areas that will be valued.

It is fundamental that all unions, movements, and political organizations that have class independence take a stand and support the struggle in defense of the coastal dune ecosystem. This is a struggle not only in defense of the climate security of traditional peoples, the workers of Maricá, and the oppressed classes in general, but also a struggle for self-determination, preservation of the way of life of traditional peoples, and defense of the working class in general.

Out with Maraey!
