This Monday, August 24th, indigenous peoples, traditional fishermen, and activists closed the RJ-110 highway during a protest for the preservation of the Maricá restinga biome and against the construction of a Spanish mega-resort in São José do Imabassai. The Maraey project, planned for an environmental preservation area in Maricá, is the target of lawsuits in the Supreme Federal Court, and the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro is questioning the environmental licenses.[...]
The Maricá Restinga is a natural and scientific heritage of our people, one of the few remaining preserved restinga areas in the country and the last large stretch of restinga in our city, from Barra de Maricá to Itaipuaçu. It shelters a great diversity of native species, many of them with food and medicinal value, in addition to being home to the traditional fishing community of Zacarias and the Guarani, Mata Verde Bonita, and Morada dos Pássaros indigenous villages, as well as being a leisure area for the entire population.Thus, it is extremely important to support this struggle, which will decide the future of the Maricá communities. We will continue to follow each stage of this process and defend the rights of our people to the land and to nature.
