Dear New Yorkers,

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump kept it cordial during an hourlong meeting at Gracie Mansion on Monday — and agreed to coordinate more closely on redeveloping a massive Queens railyard into thousands of new homes.

While many details still need to be worked out, the plan could bring up to 12,000 housing units to the 190-acre Sunnyside Yard and help address the city’s affordable housing crunch.

“We’ve agreed to set up a new level of that conversation between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team,” Mamdani told reporters at a press briefing alongside Trump after their conversation.

Trump, who is in town for the United Nations General Assembly, said the project is “going to need a lot of federal approvals and probably some federal money to do it. But it’s always been a great location.”

The two leaders also discussed counterterrorism security and immigration enforcement, an area where Mamdani has fiercely criticized Trump’s policies, including his administration's revocation of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and other nationalities.

Trump did not commit to any changes to the revocation, but noted “the mayor feels very strongly about it, and he did bring it up.” Mamdani said he told Trump his power over Haitian New Yorkers’ status “can either deliver or deny stability in their lives and the lives of those who love them.”
