Dear New Yorkers,

As society grapples with the potentially catastrophic impacts of artificial intelligence, the technology is already having a concrete effect on New York City’s job market for entry-level tech workers.

Listings for those jobs have plummeted by half since 2022, even as overall tech employment in the city remains stable, according to a new analysis by the nonprofit Center for an Urban Future. Companies with the greatest exposure to generative AI have experienced the biggest declines in entry-level jobs and had offered the highest average salaries to new hires.

“For many years, these were amazing opportunities for people getting a job because tech was growing so fast and adding so many entry-level jobs,” says Jonathan Bowles, the center’s executive director. “Those positions for young people with limited experience are harder to come by and there is intense competition.”

At the same time, entry-level postings for jobs requiring AI skills have grown 20% since 2022 across a range of industries, including professional services, finance, healthcare and education. Tech workers with skills in fields such as security and data analysis are also being recruited.
