Dear New Yorkers,

Dan Moynihan worked on the Ground Zero clean-up operation for a month after the 9/11 terror attacks 25 years ago. Today, the retired volunteer firefighter and Marine Corps veteran is still facing the health consequences of that fateful morning.

“I’ve had 14 surgeries and procedures for illnesses, including the removal of a brain tumor. I deal with debilitating cluster headaches, chronic migraines and respiratory issues,” says Moynihan, 61. “I lost a lot of people that day, including some of my best friends. And it’s not over. We’re still dying.”

He is among the 9/11 survivors and first responders who hope the city’s release of long-withheld documents related to the air quality around Ground Zero in the tragedy’s aftermath will spur more research into the illnesses that have since affected this cohort.

They also hope the disclosures will encourage younger people who were in the area at the time to enroll in the official health and victim compensation programs for survivors.

“I speak at schools and I often hear young people who are hesitant to seek eligibility,” Moynihan points out. “They’ll say something like, ‘No, that’s for you guys — you’re the heroes.’ ‘No,’ I say. ‘We fought for everyone to get covered.’”

THE KICKER: New Yorkers can commemorate 9/11 through an online transcription project to preserve memorial messages inscribed on 56 wooden support beams that surrounded temporary reflecting pools near the World Trade Center site.
