NYCHA recently began notifying six holdout households at the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses that officials have started the process of terminating their leases through an internal system that doesn’t include an independent court.
One of the households has since agreed to move, while another has unrelated issues involving alleged nonpayment of rent. Four are facing eviction for “failure to transfer.”
“We do not believe that NYCHA is asking these people to move for any lawful purpose,” the tenants’ attorney Thomas Hillgardner told The City Reporter.
Matthew Horgan, a spokesperson for the authority, said the holdouts were "offered at least two different temporary apartments that fit their household’s needs” within the community, and their refusal to relocate “is a breach of the rules in their leases.”
Unless those households agree to move, their lease termination proceedings are set to go before a NYCHA hearing officer as soon as next month. Dozens of other residents at the complexes have already temporarily relocated to other buildings there as part of the redevelopment plans.
President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday at Gracie Mansion, as the president visits New York City for the U.N. General Assembly.
A spokesperson for the mayor said “the meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.” This will be the third in-person meeting between Trump and Mamdani since he was elected mayor last November. Both prior meetings took place at the White House.
Asked last week about potentially meeting with Trump, Mamdani said they “continue to have a conversation about how best to deliver for the city.”
Although the two are not aligned on policy, they had kept a cordial relationship since their first meeting in November, where the president appeared impressed by Mamdani’s election win.
At a meeting in February, Mamdani pitched Trump on federal funding for redeveloping Queens' Sunnyside Yard and helped get a Columbia University undergraduate released from immigration detention.
