Tegendraads Leesvoer uit andere media

De berichtgeving over de 'poging tot staatsgreep' van oligarch Jevgeni Prigozjin met zijn Wagner-troepen werd geleid door wishful thinking, door wat men hoopte dat er gebeurde, namelijk de val van president Poetin, maar ook de alternatieve media laten ditmaal veel vragen onbeantwoord. Enerzijds komt Poetin hier sterker uit, anderzijds was het wel uiterst beschamend voor hem dat dit kon gebeuren. Veel stof tot tegendraads nadenken.

Van Seymour Hersh hoeft het niet te verbazen dat hij een heel andere analyse maakt van wat gebeurde in Rusland met het initiatief van Russische oligarch Jevgeni Prigozjin – laat ons niet vergeten dat hij een zakenman is, geen militair en in geen geval iemand met enige militaire ervaring.

De reacties van westerse leiders was vooral ‘wishful thinking’ én een afleiding van het Oekraiens lente-zomeroffensief dat helemaal niet zo triomfantelijk loopt als de media hier laten uitschijnen. Poetin wist een ‘poging tot staatsgreep’ – of wat je het ook noemen wil- in minder dan 24 uur te neutraliseren en zit volgens Hersh steviger dan ooit in het zadel.

Legendarisch musicus en activist voor burgerrechten ging heen op 25 april, 96 jaar oud. Zeven jaar geleden, in 2016, keek hij terug op de mensen die hun revolutionaire ideeën ‘uitverkochten’ toen ze de kruimels van het kapitalistisch systeem begonnen te krijgen. Zij ruilden hun plannen en ambities voor een sociale wereld voor iedereen in voor de hel van het ieder-voor-zich-kapitalisme.

Scott Ritter is voormalig VN-wapeninspecteur voor de ontmanteling van de chemische en biologische massavernietigingswapens in Irak. Ook hij minimaliseert in zijn gesprek met Judge Napolitano – eveneens een isolationistische Amerikaan die je niet bepaald een linkse pacifist kan noemen – de impact van het initiatief van Prigozjin, maar noemt het wél een poging tot staatsgreep.

Prigozjin heeft die snel opgegeven omdat hij vrij snel besefte dat doorgaan voor hemzelf een doodsvonnis betekende. De VS en Groot-Brittannië waren op voorhand op de hoogte dat dit zou gebeuren en hadden gespeculeerd op een moordend militair treffen met het Russisch leger en een mogelijke ontaarding in een burgeroorlog in Rusland. Dat zou op zijn beurt een keerpunt kunnen zijn voor het Oekraiense zomeroffensief. Niets daarvan heeft zich voorgedaan.

Poetin komt hier weliswaar sterker uit, omdat hij het vrij snel wist op te lossen, maar het was tegelijk ook zeer beschamend voor hemzelf dat dit kon gebeuren. Positief voor hem was dan weer wel dat niet één militair leider, niet één oligarch zich achter Prigozjin heeft geschaard.

Dit had echter zeer slecht kunnen aflopen. De vraag is maar wat een Russische regering met kernwapens zou hebben gedaan in dat geval.

The city Department of Correction isn’t the only jail system keeping advocates, elected officials and reporters in the dark when a person in custody dies.

While the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) typically reaches out to close relatives within 24 hours of a death, members of the public sometimes wait weeks before learning of the latest death behind bars. And the state prison system has never put out the word to the media when prisoners die.

Critics say the information blackout comes at a cost.

“They are not reporting it to us,” said state Assemblymember Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan), who is drafting legislation to require DOCCS to notify state lawmakers quarterly. “So if there are problems going on, we can’t improve those situations.”

The proposed measure comes as the city’s Correction Department abruptly stopped telling reporters about deaths behind bars, as THE CITY reported last month.

City Budget Deal May Be Close

The City Council and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to shake hands on a new budget later today, THE CITY has learned. The deal includes a restoration of the $36.2 million in proposed cuts to the city’s three library systems, according to multiple sources.

Council leadership said they fought for the restoration of the cuts in the approximately $107 billion budget. A spokesperson for Mayor Adams, Jonah Allon, told THE CITY that “we have been working with City Council to evaluate if adjustments can be made through the budget process.”

The libraries already face a $1 billion gap for repairing their decrepit buildings, THE CITY reported earlier this week. The Council is expected to vote on the budget Friday.

European borders have been the stage of decades-long efforts to militarise and securitise the control of migration. Huge sums of public money have been invested in deploying security and defense tools and equipment to curb arrivals towards the EU territory, both via externalisation policies in countries in the Middle East and North Africa and at Europe’s borders themselves.

In this strategy of “muscling-up” the borders, technology has played a crucial role. Often presented as promising, objective and infallible, technology is used to surveil, control and allegedly even predict mobility in the Mediterranean region, while making a distinction between those who are allowed to enter the Schengen territory from those who aren’t. But is it so? And what are the consequences for the people subjected to these technologies?
